News from the Office….
Thank you to all of our volunteers!
Thank you once again to all of Rocky Mountain Elementary's wonderful volunteers who have helped us throughout the school year. Your hard work and dedication have been invaluable to all of our staff and students!
Registration for Returning Students
Please watch for registration forms that will go home the week of May 5. These forms need to be completed for those students who will be returning to Rocky Mountain next year.
If the registration form is not returned to the office, parents will be asked to come in to the school and register their student(s) in person.
Lost and Found
Our Lost and Found cart is once again overflowing. If your student is missing a coat, sweater, lunch box, or other item, please have them take a moment to check the cart. ![]()
Any items left at the end of the school year will be donated to charity.
Kindergarten Orientation
Kindergarten Orientation will be held on Wednesday, May 7 from 6:30p.m. – 7:30p.m. in the Library. Any new kindergartners and their parents are invited to tour the school, meet the kindergarten teachers and enjoy some refreshments.
In addition, the BASE Program will be registering students for the KEEP Program during Kindergarten Orientation. KEEP is designed just for Kindergartners. We take kindergartners everyday between the hours of 7:45-2:30 when the kindergartners are not in school. Our schedule is flexible so we register students either a weekly, daily, or drop in basis. Give us a call for more information, or check in with us during Kindergarten Orientation.
Cafeteria News
Please read the district information enclosed in this newsletter regarding the process for lunch money refunds and the cutoff date for charging lunches.
News from BASE
Rocky Mountain Elementary BASE Program is in the process of registering for our summer program.
We have so many fun and activities planned! Among others, will be going to Amazing Jakes, The Melting Pot, swimming, Jungle Quest, and even a Rockies Game. We will also be doing many activities here at the school and are excited for all of our special guests including the Butterfly Pavilion, the Raptor Education Foundation, and even a Science Wizard! Students who attend the Summer Camp will be served a breakfast and lunch nearly everyday. We do work in conjunction with CCAP, and our rates come in considerably cheaper than most daycares in the area. Give us a call for more information and to register your child. Kindergarteners Learn About Sunshine and Shadows
We can't believe the year is almost over. It has been a joy teaching your children!
We will be winding down the year with lots of activities. We are writing animal compare and contrast reports to share with you at our Celebration of Learning night on Thursday, May 15. We will be doing our last science unit on Sunshine and Shadows.
(This is always a favorite because we make silhouettes.) Students will also be writing a book about themselves.
Assessment Day will be coming up on Monday May 12. We are excited to see the growth all the children have made since August.
The last day for Kindergarteners is Wednesday June 4. We will be having a Kindergarten graduation celebration. Times have not been determined yet. Invitations will come in May.
If you know any families who will have children in Kindergarten next year, we are having a Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday May 7 from 6:30-7:30pm.
1 st Graders Will Go
to the Botanic Gardens
First graders will begin a Science unit on plants. We are excited to be going to the Botanic Gardens on May 20. This will give the students the opportunity to see the wonderful diversity of plants. The students will also grow three different kinds of plants in the classroom. Look for the sunflowers, beans and corn growing in first grade.
All year we have been gathering student work for the Young Learner's Celebration on May 15 from 5:30-7:30. We hope you can come by and see your child's growth in writing.
Please continue to read over the summer. Does your child have a library card? This is an easy way for your child to practice reading and share great literature.
Thanks for all of your support this year! Good luck in second grade!
Second Graders are
Reporting on Insects
Where did the year go?? Testing will be upon us very soon. Our suggestion to all parents is to really work at home with your child to help the kids do their very best. Reading and talking about their reading DAILY is very important. Writing stories at home and reinforcing all the great skills they learned this year (especially capitals and periods) would be beneficial. In math, keep practicing those addition and subtraction facts up to 20. They need to recall them in 3 seconds! Playing the math games from all the units will reinforce the skills taught throughout the year. We appreciate your help at this time of the year.
Second graders are really busy writing an insect report and can't wait to share them with you. They are also anxious to share all of their wonderful poetry with you at the Poetry Festival on May 2nd.
Our classes will be going on our last field trip to see a play called Henry and Mudge based on the book by Cynthia Rylant.
We have had a wonderful year with your children! We wish them and all of you a fabulous summer and best of luck in 3rd grade!
Second Grade Teachers
3 rd Graders Learn
About the Human Body
Third graders are in the middle of the Human Body science unit! They are learning all the scientific names for the bones. They are discovering the different types of joints our body has and soon they will learn the muscle names.
We will have the Museum of Nature and Science visit us to further our knowledge on the human body in May.
Our reading genre is sports this month. Visiting the Pepsi Center helped us kick off this fun unit! The students are reading sports books and learning facts about the sport and about famous people that play or have played the sport.
Thank you to all the parent volunteers that have attended the field trips with us and that have helped out in the classroom, we appreciate you!
Fourth Graders Looks Forward
to their Field Trips
As this exciting school year draws to an end, fourth grade is eagerly anticipating their 2 upcoming field trips! On May 6th, we will be visiting the Phoenix Gold Mine in Idaho Springs. While we are there, we will be learning about the impact that mining has had on Colorado .
On May 16th, we will be visiting the Denver Museum of Nature and Science to explore their space exhibit. We will be learning all about the solar system
and we are going to watch an IMAX movie on black holes!
Thank you for all of your support this school year!!
Fifth Graders
are Still Reading !
The month of May is always a very quick month for our fifth graders. We have a lot of learning that still needs to be done before our students move on to a new adventure called MIDDLE SCHOOL!!!
Reading : We are finishing up our fantasy reading and will start Reader's Theatre. The students should still be reading at home every night for at least 20 minutes.
Writing: This month the students will get a chance to go back in time and write a Historical Fiction story about a time period. This is a great way to show what they have learned in Social Studies.
Math: Unit 11 and Unit 12 are the final two units that need to be taught in EveryDay Math.
Social Studies: It is the 18 th century and there is growing tension between the Colonists and the British…What shall the Colonists do??? This is the question that is being asked of our fifth graders in Social Studies.
Young AmeriTowne: Preparations have begun for our field trip to Young AmeriTowne. The goal of Young AmeriTowne is to help students prepare for life as an adult. The series of lessons are on topics such as: free enterprise, economics, banking, money management, government, communications, and philanthropy. Our field trip is on May 29 th !!
Finally, mark your calendars for June 3 rd . Fifth grade Continuation will be held at 10:30a.m. in the gym.
This is a wonderful celebration for our Fifth Graders. We look forward to seeing you all there.
